Booking Your Interview

You researched.  You applied.  You waited.  You uploaded documents to DOC.  You waited.  You waited some more.  And then...

An email!  From Disney!  Inviting you to interview!

Yaaaay!!!!!

Ok, let's all catch our breath and try not to pass out from hyperventilation.

Let's go back a step so I can explain the process at this point in the application.  The way applications and interviews worked in the past has changed this year, and whilst it might change again in the future, it seems like Disney is trying to do more things online and streamline the process.  So at the time of my application in 2014 for the January 2015 intake of the Aus/NZ program, this is how it worked.

Disney recruiters are based out of Florida so when you send in an application or email/phone the recruiting office, that is where they are.  The recruiters receive and sort through all of the applications an do an initial selection process.  This seems to mostly be based on your eligibility for the program and the J1 Visa.  Unlike the Domestic DCP in America, the International Programs generally require a face-to-face interview.  The way this works in Australia and New Zealand is that the recruiters have a relationship with several schools/universities/colleges in Australia and New Zealand and they organise to hold the Presentation/Interview sessions at those schools.  The recruiters will then travel to Australia and New Zealand to conduct the interviews.  At the time of my intake, the interviews were held in the following cities:

Australia: Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne
New Zealand: Dunedin, Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland

So what happens if you don't live in one of those cities?  You have to travel.  Yes, this may mean taking a day or two off to get there.  Yes, it may involve flying across the country at your own expense and navigating a city you're not used to.  Unfortunately it does feel a little unfair on those who don't live close to an interview location, but it is the way it is and there's nothing you can do about it.  Choosing to invest the time and money into getting to the interview is something you need to decide for yourself.

Around about a month before interviews, you will receive an email inviting you to book an interview.  The email looks a little something like this:

Now you may have noticed it talks about a presentation and interview.  That's because there are two parts to the interviewing process.  The first is a presentation about the program, which runs for about an hour.  Everyone who is interviewing must attend this presentation and it's a group session.  I will cover this in more detail in a later post.  The second part is the interview, a one-on-one interview with one of the Disney recruiters. This interview will run for about 15-20 minutes.

When you click on the link in your email, it will take you to a website where there is a list of all available days for presentations and interviews.  First you need to choose the day and location that suits you best.  If you attend on of the schools where the interviews are being held, you will most likely want to attend there.  However, you can attend whichever session you prefer, and you do not have to be a student of a particular school to attend the interviews there.  Once you have chosen the presentation you wish to attend you will be given a choice of interview 'windows'.  These are one-hour blocks within which your interview should be held.  It's a pretty simple process, just tick the relevant box, confirm your booking and you're good to go.

At this point if you are needing to travel to the interviews, you should organise your travel arrangements.  Remember, these are at your own expense - Disney will not pay for your flights or train ticket.  Make sure when booking transportation that you give yourself adequate time to get to the presentation venue on time.

Up next, we will look at the Roles you can apply for and how to fill out the Role Checklist.  Or, return to the Masterlist.
